Messi Transfer

Lionel Messi shocked the world when he moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona on a free transfer, forced to leave his boyhood club due to financial obstacles.

The Barcelona-born player has won 16 out of 25 possible trophies at the club, including four La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns. He also netted 514 goals in 583 appearances with Barcelona.

The Argentina international said he weighed up his options for some time before finally deciding to leave the Nou Camp...

Why did Messi leave Barcelona?

Messi leave Barcelona

On August 5, Barcelona confirmed through a statement that Messi “will not continue” with the club. A day later, Laporta said: “Leo wanted to stay and the club wanted him to stay, but with the LaLiga rules it has not been possible.”

Lionel Messi broke down at his final press conference as a Barcelona player. Since making his senior debut at Camp Nou in 2003, Messi has played 778 games for the Catalan club, scoring 672 goals. He claimed he wanted to stay at the club and had even accepted a 50 percent salary cut to sign a new contract. But as it turned out, Barcelona couldn’t even afford a cut-price Messi.
For over a decade, the club had been saying Messi would stay. But Laporta’s statement on August 5 changed that. "Lionel Messi has decided not to be part of FC Barcelona's plans for next season," read the club's statement.

In a recent interview with TyC Sports, Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta suggested the club was 'very close to signing another player — but would not identify the target.
The news that Messi was leaving caused an immediate effect on La Liga's results as Real Madrid went on an astonishing run around the rest of their competitors and won La Liga by a 16-point margin.
Messi had wanted to stay at Barcelona, but his demands of the club meant that he had lost the trust of the board. He was demanding a new deal that would have made him the highest-paid player in world football — which would have put him on a par with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo.

Earlier in May, ahead of the World Cup, Messi announced he would be foregoing money for prestige: "I've already decided not to renew my contract with FC Barcelona," he said. "They say money is what motivates me and is what drives me forward. But I don't want to be motivated by money anymore. I want to be motivated by my happiness and ambition. The desire to win is the most important thing for me. That's why I want to leave now."

As well as losing out on big money, Messi also wanted more power at the club. It wasn't just about being part of a winning squad. He wanted more autonomy, control, and input — an "amazing" deal, as he put it — that would have been hard for a club not used to dealing with so many egos and stars who demand their own way.

Zubizarreta said: "We are very close [to signing another player]. He was one of the players we had our eyes on. But now we have someone else with similar characteristics. We'll be making the announcement in the coming days. We're all very excited."
Barca vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu insisted the club would continue to try to find a replacement for Messi in the summer, but their chief executive Oscar Grau claimed it would be difficult.

"We respect Leo's decision and we want him to be happy," Grau said. "He has given us so much and we have taken a lot from him as well. It is a good time for him to go and Barca is prepared for this situation.

What is Messi's New Contract?

Messi's New Contract

Lionel Messi has agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain on a two-year contract. The six-time Ballon d'Or winner arrived in Paris on Tuesday afternoon to seal his move to the French club on a deal worth £25m per year after tax, plus bonuses.

The 31-year-old will replace Neymar, who joined Barcelona's rivals in a lucrative £198m deal last August. He will have a medical on Wednesday afternoon before signing his contract with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, with the aim of him being available for the following weekend's game against Amiens.

Edinson Cavani, meanwhile, could leave Paris Saint-Germain after just one season as rumors of an exit to another club continue to increase. According to the Corriere Dello Sport, the Uruguayan striker is angling for a move back to Italy. Juventus are interested in his services, but it is believed that Napoli has made an official offer.

Roma and Napoli have been linked with Leicester City's Riyad Mahrez. According to L'Equipe, Roma is preparing a €45m bid for the Algerian winger after having held chats with the Foxes. But Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis is also interested in signing Mahrez as he looks to bolster his squad after selling star man, Gonzalo Higuain, to rivals Juventus on loan.

Mahrez has also been linked with a move away from the King Power Stadium, with Arsenal and Manchester United both interested in signing him. The Foxes have already rejected a bid from Chelsea for defender Harry Maguire.

Juventus striker Gonzalo Higuain could be heading to the Premier League after all. Football Italia, via Football London, is reporting that West Ham United is preparing a £43m offer for the Argentine striker. The Hammers are in need of another forward after losing Andy Carroll last week, with Marko Arnautovic linked with a move away to China.

Manchester City will complete their signing of French youngster Claudio Gomes this week if he impresses during his trial with the club. The midfielder has been training with Pep Guardiola's side since November and is set to be offered a contract in the days ahead.

He arrives in Manchester this week to undertake a trial with the club and will play for their under-23s side against Norwich City on Monday night. Guardiola is keen on adding more depth to his squad, with the Hammers also interested in signing Kevin de Bruyne from Manchester City.

Manchester United is closing in on the signings of two new fullbacks as they look to bolster their squad ahead of next season. The Mirror is reporting that a deal is close for West Ham's 32-year-old right-back Ryan Fredericks should he impress during his first trial at Old Trafford this week.

Who is better Messi or Ronaldo?

Messi or Ronaldo

Messi is the all-time La Liga top scorer, as well as having the most assists in the competition's history – with Ronaldo in second for goals scored and in third for assists provided – while Ronaldo is the UEFA Champions League all-time top goalscorer and assist provider, with Messi in second for both goals scored and assists provided in overall competitions.

Ronaldo tops the list of all-time top scorers and top assist providers in UEFA competitions, with Messi second for goals scored and Ronaldo first for assists provided in overall competitions.

Knockout stage performance

Messi has scored 44 times in the knock-out rounds of Europe's premier club competition – more than any other player – with Cristiano Ronaldo second on 34 and Neymar third on 23.

Messi is also the only player to have netted more than 30 goals from 40 or fewer shots in a season – doing so twice, with a record-equalling 37 coming from 33 attempts as he recorded La Liga's highest average conversion rate (12.6%) in 2011/12.

However, Ronaldo has won the UEFA Champions League five times compared to Messi's four victories, with both men playing a key role in each final they have taken part in.

The Portuguese also scored two goals against Juventus as Real Madrid became the first team to retain the trophy in the Champions League era.

Ronaldo was also named man of the match in Real Madrid's 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid at San Siro, ending their rivals' hopes of reaching a third straight final.

The duo has also played in six domestic cup finals, with Messi scoring twice and Ronaldo netting twice in those matches.

Messi had to wait four years from his first shot on goal until he found the net for Barcelona in a Spanish Cup final, but he then scored five times against Sevilla to help win that trophy, while Ronaldo hit twice as Real Madrid came from 3-0 down to beat Sporting Lisbon 5-3 after extra time in their 2014/15 showpiece.

Ronaldo also scored Real Madrid's 120th-minute winner in the 2016 Spanish Cup final against Barcelona, taking him past his great rival as the competition's all-time top scorer with 17, although Messi has since taken that record back.

Ahead of Saturday's encounter in Kyiv, Ronaldo is odds-on with media partners William Hill to finish the season with more goals than Messi and has been given 2/7 odds of beating his great rival to the top scorer award in this season's Champions League.

Messi Net Worth

As of 2022, Lionel Messi’s net worth is $400 million, making him one of the richest soccer players in the world.

Lionel Messi is an Argentinian footballer (soccer player) known to be one of the greatest players of the modern football league. He is known for his goal-scoring records and his ability to dribble the ball past opponents. He is frequently cited as one of the best soccer players in history.

Lionel Messi started playing football at a very young age, joining his first team, Newells Old Boys, at age 13. After he joined the club he was given the nickname “El Cholo” by his teammates because of his resemblance to a certain Argentinian actor who used to play in a certain movie.

In 2004, Messi moved from Newell’s Old Boys to Barcelona for $2.6 million, making him the most expensive transfer in Spanish football history up until that time. His reputation as a great player started to grow and he was offered a professional contract by FC Barcelona, the only club that had rejected him when he was younger.

Messi’s popularity grew in Barcelona and as of now, he’s gained over 500 million followers across social media. He has received many awards for his achievements, including the FIFA Ballon d’Or four times (only 7 players in history have received this award at least 4 times).

Recently Messi has signed a deal with Nike, where he’ll earn $20 million over 5 years.

His career and personal life have been the subject of much speculation since his playing days; many people think that he is using PEDs as part of a performance-enhancing drug program or that his family has had a hand in his drug use. If these rumors are true then Messi’s net worth could go down quite a bit.
